Our analytic solutions need the on-demand scalability of the cloud to be practical based on the intense demands we put on our compute resources.  We are looking for an experienced Cloud Engineer to join our team.


Working with our stakeholders, this role will ensure the timely, efficient, secure implementation of cloud solutions to help power GNS’s web and analytic products and services.  This position represents a tremendous opportunity to push the cloud to the limit for an individual capable of working in a fast-paced, customer-focused, and challenging environment.  We are looking for someone who is a strong problem solver and has the ability and willingness to constantly learn and update their skills as well as be able to establish themselves as a critical player within a team.

The position, reporting to the IT Manager, is responsible for scoping, planning/designing, delivering and maintaining systems in a security–critical environment based on needs/requirements.  The Cloud Engineer will play an active role within the organization on a continuing basis and must be able to adapt and learn quickly.  The Cloud Engineer will play an active role within the organization on a continuing basis, working together with a Cloud Architect and Systems Administrators, and must be able to adapt and learn quickly.  Attention to detail and completeness of work (documentation) will be expected.

  • Design and implement cloud-first solutions to support GNS’s needs
  • Install, maintain, and troubleshoot servers, OSs, software applications, and other computing systems
  • Procure cloud based resources
  • Monitor and manage Amazon AWS cloud-based infrastructure and associated services
  • Proactively resolve open issues with scientists or other team members as needed
  • Collaborate with other tech team members in an Agile development environment
  • Proactively communicate risks, obstacles, and deficiencies in plans to the IT team
  • Create user accounts and assign user permissions
  • Set up system-wide software
  • Execute anti-virus mechanisms
  • Create backup and retrieval policies and assign bulk storage
  • Create file systems
  • Monitor network communication
  • Update systems upon release of new OSs or software
  • Implement computer, network and security policies for system and network users
  • Contribute to business continuity and disaster recovery efforts
  • Implement script based solutions as needed
  • System-related project management
  • User training and management
  • Hardware and software system security, such as protection against hardware theft and abuse, malware/spyware and unauthorized use of systems and components, including firewall and intrusion detection system(IDS) maintenance
  • Support the rest of the IT team as needed


Experience with:

  • AWS and other cloud services in an HPC environment
  • System Administration (e.g. Linux, Windows, Macintosh)
  • Open source enterprise software (e.g. OpenVPN, OpenDJ)
  • IT automation software (e.g. Puppet, Chef)
  • Healthcare privacy and security (e.g. HIPAA)
  • Planning IT implementations
  • Networking
  • Monitoring, troubleshooting, and supporting enterprise infrastructures
  • Solid communication and collaboration skills
  • BA/BS in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Science or related discipline preferred and 5 – 10 years of experience
